The Cloisonne technique began in China almost 600 years ago. The technique for making cloisonne has changed very little in all that time. Artisans still hammer out copper to form basic shapes for the urns. Now, sometimes wire mesh is used to shape the intricate designs instead of copper wire, which is still used by some artisans. Enamel in all types of beautiful colors is added to the base between the wire mesh. The kiln firing process for the cloisonne urns for ashes is repeated several times to increase the vibrancy of the colors.
